My hero Rod Serling had a simple approach to writing: he believed in dreaming up a good idea and a great ending, then filling in the rest. If my endings don't make your jaw drop, then I haven't done my job. Add character to that mix, and you've got me.

To my mind, there are five original pillars of writing in Western history:

· The Bible
· Greek and Roman Mythology
· Shakespeare
· Cervantes (novels)
· The Twilight Zone

What do all of these have in common? A timeless understanding of human nature. Stars flame out; planets live and die; yet humanity stays exactly the same. Somehow these bygone masters managed to capture our species' essence, to bottle this lightning for all time. Their work is our reward.
